Where the Plains Fall Away

Pull off U.S. Highway 82 just east of Crosbyton and watch the endless Llano Estacado suddenly drop into the deep, red-walled gorge of Blanco Canyon. This breathtaking break in the plains has awed travelers, warriors, and ranchers for centuries, its rugged beauty a timeless reminder of the raw power of West Texas. Stand at the edge, feel the wind, and imagine the echoes of history rising from the canyon floor.

History

Blanco Canyon earned its place in Texas lore in 1871 when Kwahada Comanche leader Quanah Parker and his warriors ambushed Col. Ranald Mackenzie’s Fourth Cavalry in one of the fiercest battles of the Plains Indian Wars. Later, Texas Rangers established Camp Roberts nearby, and the legendary Two-Buckle Ranch headquartered at Silver Falls. The canyon remains a living testament to the Comanche resistance, military campaigns, and the hardy ranching families who followed.
